The Titanic Catastrophe of 1912
June 30th, 2010
It started with a ship and an iceberg. On April 14, 1912 the Titanic crashed into an iceberg, sending the ship under the freezing waters of the Atlantic Ocean. At that time, the ship was the largest and most luxurious liner on the sea. Completed to accommodate an elite class of people, the ocean liner included such luxuries as an on board swimming pool, gymnasium, large dining halls, and intricate wood and metal work.
The ship’s passenger total was 2,223 upon its departure. This total included the both the ship’s crew and passengers. With limited room in the life boats and chaos upon the sinking ship, only 706 survived the catastrophe, meaning that 1,517 were lost in the icy waters of the Atlantic. A ship from Nova Scotia was sent within days of the Titanic sinking to retrieve bodies and clean up whatever wreckage they could manage. Needless to say, the Titanic’s maiden voyage of 1912 was left with an ending that will be remembered throughout history.
